I mean...if it’s a W220, you’re better off. Trust me.

Yeah, the guy I sit next to at work has 2 german monstrosities. His pride and joy is his 2007 BMW 750. Cleanest 750 I’ve ever seen in person. That’s in the garage and his unabashed favorite. His daily is a 2002 CLK55 AMG. And he seems to have good luck with them. I just know if I bought a used AMG as a daily I would spend $10k immediately on repairs.

Being a janitor is a pretty rough grind.

My neighbor across the street from my parents has a 2005 CLK55, that I think he’s had for over 10 years now. I don’t think he’s had any major problems that weren’t caused by him rear ending someone. I think he’s had 3 new bumpers on the car. Other than that those seems decently reliable.

It’s not about money; it’s about priorities. Who knows, maybe he lives in it?

There’s folks with mind blowing amount of personal debt, pretty much answers the question how can they afford ____? Others own more budget appropriate stuff, that they outright own. I’m in the second camp

One of our “facilities” guys, (basically the janitor,) drives a loaded up new Grand Cherokee. He is retired military and his wife makes good coin - he probably doesn’t need to work but wants something to do something to stay busy. Great guy actually.

I had a 2002 E55 as a DD for 7 years. Very few issues, none mechanical - they are solid cars, and definitely the best MB product of that otherwise iffy era.

I don’t think I would take an early W220 S600 for free, so it might not be what it seems. Some of these cars can be bought for the price of a Corolla lease initial payment today.

Are W220s really that bad? Everyone here so far says they’re shit.

I think the later ones are OK, but ABC can be something to avoid, and the early V12 models seem to be money pits. I’d also be leery of MY 2000 cars due to year one quirks. Some say they aren’t bad, but those people often seem to have ample free time and facilities to perform repairs themselves. Lovely cars when everything is going right, anyway.

Later V8 versions (430, 500, 55) are the best options. Avoiding ABC is best. 05-06 sans ABC is the absolute best option and is surprisingly safe. That being said a V12 with ABC is an incredibly rewarding car if you know what you’re in for as far as ownership costs are concerned.

I’d go after a final run S55, or maybe a final run V12 car. I like rare.

Hey this is an older thread, true, but FWIW — I’ve read the first year or so of W220's are absolute freaking disasters, like, walk before you buy one of these
